Abstract: For almost 30 years, Alistair Borthwick has travelled to China in order to carry out research on rivers. He first visited the Yangtze River in 1990, and has visited Peking University almost every year since 1998, working with colleagues on all material fluxes in large rivers. This lecture will be divided into four parts. The first part will describe the journey made by the traveller from the west, and the many lessons learnt by the speaker during his visits to China. The second part will examine concepts of sustainability applicable to the world’s large rivers. The third part will focus on human and climate impacts on the Yellow River and Yangtze River, both of fundamental importance to Chinese civilization. The fourth part will look to the future, to the opportunities posed by river data analytics and more holistic management of large rivers globally, so that they can meet their environmental, socio-economic, and institutional functions in a rapidly developing world.
